FAQs

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No, you can book an appointment directly with us. We welcome self-referrals as well as GP referrals, especially for services like MECS (Minor Eye Conditions Service).

Are you accepting NHS patients?

Yes, we offer NHS-funded eye examinations for eligible patients. This includes children under 16, students under 19 in full-time education, over-60s and family history of glaucoma, diabetes and individuals receiving certain benefits.

What is the MECS (Minor Eye Conditions Service)?

MECS is an NHS-funded service that allows us to assess and treat a range of eye problems such as red eyes, flashes, floaters, painful eyes, and more—without needing to visit A&E or your GP.

What technology do you use for eye examinations?

We use the latest diagnostic equipment, including OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scanning and retinal photography which allows us to see detailed 3D images of the retina. This helps detect conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration at their earliest stages.

Do you provide children’s eye tests?

Yes, we specialise in Paediatric eye care. Harley Bain has extensive experience in children’s eye health, including time spent working in the Paediatric department at Chase Farm Hospital. We provide a gentle, thorough approach tailored for younger patients.

How long does an eye test take?

A standard eye examination typically takes around 30 minutes. If you’re having additional scans such as OCT or are attending for a MECS assessment, it may take a bit longer.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Please bring:

  • Your current glasses or contact lenses (including prescription if you have)

  • A list of medications if applicable

  • Your NHS number (if using NHS services)

  • Your GP details for referral purposes

  • Any questions or concerns you’d like to discuss

Do you sell glasses and lenses on-site?

Yes, our in-house Dispensing Optician, Yumi, will help you choose the right frames and lenses to suit your prescription, style, and budget. We offer a range of designer and affordable options for all ages.

How do I know if I’m eligible for a free NHS eye test?

You’re entitled to a free NHS eye test if you are:

  • Under 16

  • Aged 16–18 and in full-time education

  • Aged 60 or over

  • Diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma

  • Receiving certain benefits

Check the NHS website or contact us to confirm your eligibility.

Where are you located and how do I get there?

We’re based in Palmers Green, North London. Our practice is easily accessible by bus, train, and car. For full directions and parking info, please see our Contact Us page.
